Party DJ prices vary more than almost any other supplier, from a friend of a friend with a laptop to a full-time DJ with a van of professional kit. Both call themselves a DJ, and both will play your music, but the night they deliver is very different.

This guide shows what each budget usually buys, the things that push a quote up, and the questions that tell you whether a cheap quote is a bargain or a risk.

Why two quotes for the same night can be £300 apart

The headline price hides what matters: how long they play, how big the sound system is and what lighting they bring. A £200 DJ might play three hours on small speakers. A £500 DJ might play five hours with a PA sized for your room, dancefloor lighting and a microphone for the speeches.

Always check the hours and the kit list before comparing. A sound system that's too small for the room is the most common reason a dancefloor empties early.

What pushes the price up

Hours come first, then the date. Saturday nights from May to September and every weekend in December are peak dates, and good DJs book up early. Weekday and January parties are the easiest to get a lower price on.

The venue matters too. Upstairs rooms without a lift, long load-ins, late finishes and venues with noise limiters all add setup time or kit, and some DJs charge for travel beyond a set distance.

Kids' parties vs adult parties

A children's disco is usually shorter and cheaper, often with party games, bubbles or a dance competition included. Expect roughly £150 to £300 for one to two hours.

Adult parties run later and need more sound, so they sit in the standard or milestone tiers. If it's a mixed family party, ask for a DJ who is happy to start with the kids and build the music up as the evening goes on.

What to ask before you book

Ask how long they'll play, what speakers and lights they bring, and whether a microphone is included. Ask how they handle requests and what music they won't play.

Many venues also ask DJs for public liability insurance and PAT-tested equipment, so check both if your party is in a hired venue.

How Bookt handles DJ quotes

Tell us the date, the area, how many guests and how long you need music. DJs who cover your area quote you directly, with no obligation to book, and you can message them to ask questions or tweak the details before you choose.

A 25% deposit secures your DJ through Stripe and the rest is paid to the DJ on the night.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a DJ cost for a birthday party in the UK?

Most people pay about £200 to £400 for three to four hours. Bigger milestone parties with more guests, sound and lighting usually cost £350 to £700.

How much does a DJ charge per hour?

Most party DJs price by the event rather than the hour, but it works out at roughly £50 to £120 an hour. Extra hours on the night are often charged separately, so agree the finish time in advance.

How long should I book a DJ for?

Four hours suits most evening parties. For a long celebration with food and speeches, five to six hours means the DJ covers background music early on and the dancefloor later.

How much is a DJ for a kids' party?

Roughly £150 to £300 for one to two hours, often including party games. Ask what's included, as some kids' DJs bring props and prizes.

Do party DJs need insurance?

Many venues ask DJs for public liability insurance and PAT-tested equipment. Check with your venue and ask the DJ to confirm both.

How far in advance should I book a party DJ?

For summer Saturdays and December, two to three months ahead. For other dates a few weeks is often enough, but the best DJs go first.
